Why-Cop left woman topless in cellblock

OTTAWA -- An Ottawa police sergeant cut off a woman’s shirt and bra in the cellblock and left her topless in soiled pants for hours to punish her for injuring a colleague as she resisted arrest, the Crown argued Monday. Sgt. Steven Desjourdy has pleaded not guilty to a single count of sexual assault laid in connection with an incident in the cellblock at the Ottawa Police’s Elgin St. station on Sept. 6, 2008. The woman, who can’t be named under a routine publication ban, was being held down with a riot shield by other officers when Desjourdy cut off the clothing with scissors, prosecutor Christopher Webb said in an opening statement. “One may say there was no sexual motivation here -- the officer wasn’t motivated by sexual gratification,” Crown attorney Christopher Webb said. “Sexual assault isn’t a crime of passion, it’s a crime of power, dominance, aggression and violence.” The woman, who’d been arrested for public intoxication, then spent three hours topless in a cell before she was given what’s known as a blue suit.  A female special constable had been injured in a struggle with the woman, Webb said.
Surprise-Turkish divers 'rescue' sex doll from sea
ISTANBUL - Turkish rescue workers retrieved an inflatable sex doll from the Black Sea after police were notified by panicked residents who mistook it for a woman’s body floating offshore, Milliyet newspaper reported on Sunday.  Police cordoned off a wide stretch of beach in northern Samsun province and sent a team of divers into the water to rescue what appeared to be a drowning woman, it said.
The team quickly discovered it was in fact a blow-up doll, which they deflated before throwing in the garbage, the daily said. It was not clear where the blow-up doll had came from. The Black Sea is a key tourism destination for Turks and also sees busy international maritime shipping traffic.

How-Dog starts fire in Saskatoon kitchen

A dog started a kitchen fire at a home in Saskatoon on Sunday. Two dogs were home alone at a house on Vancouver Ave. N. Sunday afternoon when one of the animals turned on a stove burner, which ignited a cardboard box of apples on top of the stove, fire officials say. The fire then spread to the cupboards. "There was food on top of the stove, and what we think happened is that the dog went for the food ... and inadvertently bumped (a burner) on," acting assistant chief Brent Hart said Monday. The controls for the stovetop are on the front of the appliance. Firefighters think the large dog is some kind of bull-mastiff cross.
The call came in shortly before 4 p.m. from a home-monitoring system and crews were on scene shortly thereafter, Hart said."It's a very rare occurrence," Hart said. "That's just a fluke when a dog can actually activate a control."Firefighters estimate the damage — the singed cupboards and smoke damage — at about $15,000.No one — including the dog responsible for the blaze — was injured.Hart says there's a lesson to be learned from the "freaky occurrence.""Don't leave anything on top of the stove," he said.
Mistake-Melee after Facebook party invite goes viral

AMSTERDAM - Riot police broke up crowds of youths who turned violent in a Dutch town late on Friday after several thousand people descended on the community following an invitation to a birthday party posted on Facebook, Dutch media reported. Media reports said six people were hurt, including three seriously, after disturbances broke out in the northern Dutch town of Haren. Reports said shops were vandalized and

looted, a car set on fire, and street signs and lampposts damaged before police broke up the crowds. Up to 600 riot police were on the scene during the disturbances, according to one media report. There were at least 20 arrests, media said. Some 30,000 people received the invitation from a girl announcing her 16th birthday party on Facebook, according to media reports. The party was intended to be a small-scale celebration, but the girl did not set her Facebook event to private and the invitation went viral. Reports said up to 3,000 people showed up in the town of 18,000. Haren had been bracing for the event for most of the week.
What- Eel removed from man's rectum

A New Zealand man went to the emergency department last week to have an eel removed from his rectum. The man, who has not been named, showed up at the Auckland City Hospital and had X-rays and a scan, which revealed the foreign body stuck inside of him, the New Zealand Herald reported. "The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place," a hospital source told the Herald. "Doctors and nurses have come across people with strange objects that have got stuck where they shouldn't be before, but an eel has to be a first." The eel was successfully removed and the man was discharged from hospital, the Herald reported. A hospital spokesman confirmed that "an adult male presented at Auckland City Hospital this week with an eel inside him," but did not comment further "out of respect for the patient's right to privacy."

Accident-Hunter shoots self while on phone with girlfriend
ST. MATTHEWS, SC (AP) - Authorities say a hunter from Gaston accidentally shot and killed himself while talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone. Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg  that 59-year-old David Young told his girlfriend that he was trying to get his shotgun Monday afternoon when the call suddenly got quiet.
The woman called police when she couldn't get him to respond, and authorities found him dead with a shotgun wound to the chest. Investigators think Young tripped and fell, which caused the gun to fire. Authorities recommend hunters keep their guns pointed in a safe direction with the safety on when they aren't trying to shoot an animal.
