Surprise-Prosecutor arrested after joint falls from his pocket in court

NEW ORLEANS - A New Orleans city attorney was arrested for possession of marijuana and suspended from his job after a joint tumbled from his pocket in front of police in court. Jason Cantrell, 43, assistant city attorney, was issued a summons for simple possession of marijuana on Monday afternoon after a marijuana cigarette fell to the floor in Orleans Parish magistrate court, New Orleans Police spokesman Frank Robertson said. “Jason Cantrell is suspended without pay pending further investigation,” Ryan Berni, a spokesman for New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, said on Wednesday. “He was not acting in his capacity as assistant city attorney when the incident occurred.” Cantrell’s wife, a candidate for New Orleans City Council, said on her Facebook page that she was “angry, embarrassed and disappointed,” with her husband’s actions. “I absolutely do not condone his actions,” LaToya Cantrell wrote. “He will accept the legal consequences as the judicial process takes its course.

Why-Cyclops kitten nets posthumous Internet fame

A YouTube video is making a bizarre one-eyed kitty famous a week after it died. "He was born alive and survived only a short time. This was a horribly sad experience, but very intriguing to us all," reads a video description of Cleyed the Cyclops kitten. According to the folks who posted the video, they had a pregnant Bengal cat that was past its due date. They brought it to the vet on Oct. 4, where it underwent an emergency C-section with a slew of complications.

Mix up-Governor gives phone sex number for meningitis hotline

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - In an embarrassing mistake, Florida Governor Rick Scott gave out a phone sex hotline number to Floridians seeking information on a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak. Scott was providing an update on the outbreak at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday when he announced what he said was the hotline’s toll-free phone line, but gave out the wrong number. The governor’s office was alerted by a public radio station in Tampa, WUSF, which was monitoring the cabinet meeting and posted the number on its website. The station said it was “quickly notified by a reader that the number instead connected to an adult telephone line.” Callers are greeted with the recording of a woman’s voice saying: “Hello boys, thank you for calling me on my anniversary.”

A MAN has been charged with burglary his court-ordered GPS ankle monitor led police straight to him. Wilbert Matheney, 48, a registered sex offender, allegedly broke into a home wearing a global tracking device strapped to his ankle, Contra Costa Times reported.
"Lo and behold, the GPS tracker put Matheney in the victim's home on the date and at the time of the burglary," Lieutenant Paul Vernon said in a statement. Matheney, 48, is accused of a home invasion robbery in Sylmar, Los Angeles, wearing the court-ordered ankle monitor and his trademark long salt-and-pepper hairdo. He was booked for residential burglary with no bail due to his post-conviction conditions and status as a registered sex offender

Good-Ont. woman awarded $1.46M for Walmart abuse

LONDON, ONT. - A Chatham-Kent, Ont., woman has won $1.46 million in a lawsuit against retail giant Walmart. Meredith Boucher, 42, sued the company, claiming store manager Jason Pinnock, 32, subjected her to verbal abuse and humiliation on the job from May to November 2009. A Walmart lawyer, outside the Windsor, Ont., courtroom after Wednesday's jury decision, said the retailer will appeal the award. "We're delighted for Ms. Boucher," her lawyer, Myron Shulgan, told reporters. "She championed the cause for workers and indicated that corporations will be made to respond to improper treatment of employees."
