Wow-Man arrested for smuggling dinosaur bones

A Florida man described as “a one-man black market in prehistoric fossils” was arrested on Wednesday on charges of smuggling dinosaur skeletons from Mongolia, authorities said. The arrest of Eric Prokopi, 38, of Gainesville, Florida, comes amid an international custody battle over a Tyrannosaurus bataar skeleton seized by the U.S. government shortly after it was auctioned in Manhattan in May for $1.05 million. “Our recent seizure of the Tyrannosaurus bataar skeleton from Eric Prokopi was merely the tip of the iceberg,” Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a

statement. “Our investigation uncovered a one-man black market in prehistoric fossils,” he said. The dinosaur seizure and subsequent charges against Prokopi were sparked by Mongolia’s claim that the 70-million-year-old skeleton was stolen from the Gobi Desert and should be returned. Mongolian law prohibits the removal of dinosaur remains for private gain.

We’ve all made diving blunders. Heck, you’ve probably had one too many and pulled a Will Ferrell “cannonball.” But we’ve never seen a leap like this. Check out what happened when this German guy tried to jump into a pool that turned out to be frozen solid.
Nice-Ontario family builds giant Transformer sculpture

PORT HOPE, Ont. - An 11-year-old Port Hope, Ont., boy definitely has the biggest toy on the block. Maximus Dacey’s seven-metre-tall sculpture inspired by the movie Transformers, and made from transmissions and auto parts - with the odd door knob thrown in - was completed this week in the driveway of his parent’s store, Primitive
Designs. The idea came from Maximus as the family was looking for a way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the location of the store, which sells unusual antiques and crafts from around the world. I was in southeast Asia and I was walking through a market when I saw a bunch of small (Transformers) about three feet tall,” Maximum said of his inspiration. “I thought, ‘Why don’t we get a bigger one made,’ and my dad really grasped the idea.” The biggest challenge might still be ahead - storing the creation inside for the winter.
Fun-Western pair accused of sex in Dubai taxi

DUBAI - A British woman and Irish man accused of engaging in sexual activities in a Dubai taxi pleaded not guilty on Thursday, in the latest case of Westerners falling foul of the Gulf Arab emirate’s decency laws.
If convicted, the pair could face jail and then deportation from the United Arab Emirates, which walks a delicate line between keeping its Muslim identity and maintaining a successful tourism industry. Rebecca Blake and Conor McRedmond both denied charges of “breach of honour with consent” and committing “an indecent act in a taxi” when they appeared in court. They pleaded guilty to a third charge related to consumption of alcohol, their lawyer said after the hearing, without elaborating. The judge postponed the next hearing to Nov. 1. There have been several cases in recent years of Westerners accused of violating decency laws in Dubai, the most cosmopolitan of the seven-member United Arab Emirates federation.
In 2008, a British couple was found guilty of engaging in drunken sexual activity out of wedlock, and in public on a beach. They were sentenced to three months in prison followed by deportation, but had their jail terms overturned on appeal. In 2010, a British couple were sentenced to a month in jail and fined for kissing on the mouth in a restaurant. Expatriates comprise more than 90 percent of the UAE’s population, attracted by tax-free earnings and year-round sunshine. Islam bans alcohol for Muslims. In the UAE, non-Muslims can drink at certain hotels and beach bars where all-you-can-drink brunches heave with revellers every weekend.
Bad-U.S. Boy Scouts releasing sex abuse files

NEW YORK - Thousands of pages of internal files from the Boy Scouts of America detailing cases of suspected or confirmed child molestation by Scout leaders and adult volunteers spanning two decades were due to be released on Thursday as part of a civil judgment against the organization. The 1,247 files - known internally as the “confidential” or “ineligible volunteer” files - reveal in often disturbing language thousands of incidents in which young Scouts were sexually abused by adult leaders
between 1965 and 1985, according to lawyers familiar with the documents. Since at least 1919, the Boy Scouts, headquartered in Irving, Texas, has maintained the file to prevent suspected pedophiles from re-entering its ranks in other cities and states. Police were involved in nearly two-thirds of the 1965-1985 cases, according to a recently released Boy Scouts report. But in scores of cases around the nation, local Scout leaders urged confessed or suspected pedophiles to quietly resign and did not notify authorities.
